Donald Yackel

principal emeritus · kayaker · storyteller

I have always been interested in writing. I’m not sure just when that started, but when I became an elementary school principal, I inherited a “Principal’s Newsletter”. Much of the newsletter text came from other sources, but I typically wrote an educational piece and a “From the Principal” letter to parents. Over the years, I gathered praise for the quality of my writing and even won a statewide award for my work. As time went on, I began to understand that writing about something helped me to understand and clarify my feelings on a subject.

Fast forward to my retirement, when I launched a kayaking website called Yackman.com. The impetus to write these books came from a desire to elaborate on and preserve some of the stories from that first website for myself, my kids, grandchildren, and anyone else who might be interested.

“Even though I’m not a kayaker, I was delighted by the stories in this book. The essential elements of memorable trips—the people we meet, the meals we eat, the challenges we face, and the things we observe—are weaved into each story. Mr. Yackel’s friendly writing style made me feel like I was his invited confidant for each adventure. While some travel narratives provide too many particulars, Mr. Yackel is a master at setting the stage and then allowing the reader’s imagination to fill in the details.”

“I had really enjoyed his first book and his second book is just as good. It is an easy and fun read, from beginning to the end. Although I do participate in my own paddle adventures, I think it would appeal to anyone who is into outdoor adventure. It has a good mix of outdoor experiences, including stories about the people he encounters along the way.”
